Protecting Yourself From the Mortgage Meltdown

Mark Twain once famously advised, "Invest in landtheyre not making it anymore." But for millions of U.S. homeowners, these hardly seem like words of wisdom. Quick TipQuick Tip: Ask for a Full Statement of Closing Costs

If you're currently looking to buy a home, don't rely on your mortgage lender to tell you everythingespecially when it comes to hidden fees and charges. Ask any potential lender for a complete list of closing costs, and add them all up so you know what you're really paying. Closing costs may include mortgage insurance, home insurance, and loan origination fees, and generally range from 3% to 8% of the total loan amount. To learn more, visit the Fannie Mae Foundation's guide to home buying, and be sure to read Understanding Closing Costs so you'll understand the fine print when it's time to sign.
