Many recent economic indicators show that for the most part, Wyoming residents are doing well. According to the most recent U.S. Census data, the median household income of $53,802 is 4% higher than the national average. Only 9.8% of the population is living beneath the poverty level as compared with the national average of 13.8%1. Wyoming is also enjoying a low average unemployment rate of only 5.2% as compared with the current national average of 8.2%2.
However many Wyoming residents are still struggling with debt. Unemployment rates for younger adults is trending much higher nationally3 which is making it harder for younger generations to get started on building a stable financial future. According to CareOne’s own internal data, the number of 18 to 24 year old Wyoming residents who are seeking debt relief rose 31% from 2010 to 2011 and was 13% higher than our national average. Likewise, the number of relief seekers age 25 to 34 also increased 2% year over year and was 2% higher than our national average. Unfortunately the trend continues with Wyoming residents aged 35 to 44. The number of residents seeking debt relief in that age group decreased by 3% from 2010 to 2011 but still remained 6% higher than our national average.
According to the Project on Student Loan Debt, 42% of all Wyoming graduates had student loan debt and the average amount carried in 2010 was $20,5714. Unfortunately, most student loans cannot be added to debt consolidation plans. However, in many instances consumers who tackle other debt first by rolling their credit card and other eligible unsecured debts into a debt relief plan do find that they are in a better position to afford their student loans.
