The providers of CareOne Debt Relief Services® know that understanding the concerns and needs of our customers is crucial to helping them properly resolve their debt. We know how important it is because many of us have struggled with debt ourselves. We understand first-hand the burden of debt and the stress that comes with it. That’s why we’re committed to learning about the individual circumstances of all our customers, including those living in South Dakota, so that we can help them achieve their financial goals.
According to a recent report from the South Dakota Bureau of Finance and Management, the state’s economic outlook continues to improve. The state showed improvements in per capita personal income as did the housing market1. While these indicators are extremely positive, many residents of South Dakota continue to struggle.
The median household income in South Dakota is $46,369, 12% lower than the national average. In addition, 13.7% of South Dakotans are living below the poverty level, one-tenth of a percentage point off the national average2. South Dakota also has a larger population of residents over the age of 553. This older population may account for the fact that, on average, South Dakotans also pay more for health care, about $7,056 per year per capita4.
At the other end of the spectrum, younger residents are strapped with soaring higher education costs. According to the Project on Student Loan Debt, 75% of South Dakota’s students have student loan debt, the highest percentage in the nation5. Our own internal data shows that the number of South Dakotans aged 18 to 24 who sought debt relief help increased 66% from 2010 to 2011, which was a whopping 32% higher than our national average. The number of 25 to 34 year olds seeking debt relief decreased 5% during that same time period but still remained 2% higher than our national average. While most student loans cannot be added to a debt consolidation plan, many consumers are able to ease the financial burden by tackling their other unsecured debt first, making it more affordable to pay off their student loans.
