This is certainly an issue for Oklahoma residents. While 47 U.S. states saw a rise in personal income (and two states suffered a decline) in the first quarter of 2012, Oklahoma was the only state with no change1 . The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) ranked Oklahoma 34th in the nation for personal income per capita in both 2010 and 2011, 11% lower than the U.S. average. Median household income dropped between 2008 and 20102 and it’s clear from these statistics they have yet to fully recover.
The Consumer Credit Report for Oklahoma3 estimated that for the first quarter of 2012 the average consumer debt (excluding a first mortgage) for Oklahoma residents was $13,600. On a positive note, the rate of bankruptcy filings in Oklahoma is declining and is substantially below the national average, and mortgage delinquencies are lower than the national average too. However, the rate of delinquency on student loans in Oklahoma remains amongst the highest in the country at 18.5% compared to the national average of 10.6%.
We know that Oklahoma families are struggling with debt, as CareOne’s own data shows that the average amount of debt owed by Oklahoma residents seeking debt relief increased by a staggering 116% from 2010 to 2011, which is 96% higher than our national average. The number of individual debts reported by Oklahoma residents seeking debt relief increased by 65% too, a figure that’s 72% higher than our national average. Of these residents the number who claim one or more dependents increased by 95% from 2010 to 2011. This is also 6% higher than the nation’s average and shows that many Oklahoma families are struggling to make ends meet.
