We hear from customers about how unemployment has affected their finances and their lives, and we know that Mississippi workers have been hit hard by unemployment. Although Mississippi’s unemployment rate has fallen from its 2010 peak of 10.9%, the June 2012 rate of 8.8% is still higher than the national average of 8.2%. Even for those who are employed, earnings haven’t always kept pace with cost-of-living expenses. In the decade between 2000 and 2010, the median hourly wage in Mississippi only increased from $13.13 to $13.451.
Mississippi consistently ranks last of all U.S. states for median household income and individual income. In 2011 Mississippi had a per capita personal income2 of $32,176, which is 23% lower than the national average. The Mississippi Economic Policy Center calculates that in some occupations, including healthcare support and food preparation and serving, median wages are insufficient to keep a family of four above the poverty line. Mississippi had the highest poverty rate3 in the U.S. in 2010, at 22.4%, and is one of only three states to tax families below the poverty line more heavily today than it did in the early 1990s4.
With the financial challenges faced by Mississippi residents, perhaps it’s not surprising that 21.1% of the population did not have any health insurance coverage in 2010, making it the fourth highest population in the country of uninsured citizens5.
Our own data shows that these are hard times for many Mississippi families. The number of residents seeking debt relief who had one or more dependants grew by 72% from 2010 to 2011. The number of individual debts reported by Mississippi residents seeking debt relief climbed 15%, a full 21% above the our national average, and the average amount of debt they owed increased by 51% during that same time period.
The providers of CareOne Debt Relief Services understand the pressure many residents of Mississippi may be feeling, and we’re here to help.
