Debt Rising for  Georgia’s Younger Generations

The providers of CareOne Debt Relief Services® understand that you can feel weighed down by the burden of debt because many of us have been in that situation. We also know what it takes to get out from under your debt and take back control of your finances. It is our mission, and our passion, to use our experience to help others overcome their challenges with debt too.

Every individual faces unique financial challenges and many are often beyond the control of consumers; this is as true in Georgia as it is in many other places. For example, Georgia is currently experiencing the 8th highest unemployment rate in the nation, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics1. In addition, 15.7% of the population is living below the national poverty level, about two percentage points higher than the national mean rate2. Nationally, younger workers are struggling against an even higher rate of unemployment – 23.7% for workers aged 16 to 19 years old3 – and younger Georgians must contend with this as well.

According to our internal data, the number of younger Georgia residents seeking debt relief is rising at alarming rates. The number of 18 to 24 year old Georgians seeking debt help rose 40% from 2010 to 2011, while the number of 24 to 34 year olds seeking help also rose, by 4%, during that same time and was 4% higher than our national average. And the increases continued even for Georgians aged 35 to 44. We saw a 2% increase in the number of relief requests for that age range from 2010 to 2011 which was 5% higher than our national average.

For those younger Georgians who are able to find work, the news isn’t necessarily better. The Economic Policy Institute reports that wages are down, nationally, for high school and college grads: since 2000, wages for high school grads decreased 11.1%, while college grads are making 5.4% less3. Many younger workers may rely more heavily on credit cards to keep up with everyday living expenses, which may account for their growing need for debt relief.

Whether you’re struggling to establish yourself or have found yourself unable to make ends meet after years of hard work, we are here to support you and help you take back control of your financial future. If you think debt consolidation may be the solution you’re looking for, call us today to learn more. Our Certified Personal Finance Counselors® will provide a free debt analysis and will review your options with you so that you can choose the customized action plan that fits your life and your budget.
