It can be easy to preach about how to prevent college student credit card debt and the necessary evils of student loan debt, but debt management is incredibly difficult once you've amassed a large amount. Sometimes struggling with debt management can be overwhelming, especially in this scary economy. So, what are some ways to manage your debt, and perhaps even help reduce it?

Credit Card Debt Management Tips

  • Always make your student loan and credit card payments on time every month. This can help you reduce late fees.
  • If you cannot pay off your credit card balance every month, pay more than the required minimum. This will help decrease the amount owed the following month because your interest rate is calculated on how much you still owe.
  • Contact your credit card company and ask if they'll reduce your interest rate. This will sometimes work, depending on your situation, which will make paying back your credit card debt easier rather than just paying off the interest each month.
  • A simple tip for better debt management: don't use your credit card. Only purchase things you can afford instead of adding to your burden. This includes getting rid of cable and eating in.

More College Student Debt Management Tips

  • Save money in a high-interest savings account while in college to help combat your student loan payments down the road.
  • Try consolidating your student loans. Be careful, though, as sometimes this is not in your best interest. You may cut down on your interest rates and monthly payments now, but you could potentially add to your total balance.
  • If you're falling behind on your other bills--utilities, internet, etc.--ask if you can start a payment plan. This could help you during a trying time, like if you were unemployed.
  • Join AmeriCorps or the Peace Corps. These organizations will not only pay you a small stipend for doing good deeds in impoverished schools or underdeveloped countries, but they will also help you tackle some of your student loan debt.
  • If you have a savings account, use that money to pay off as much debt as you can. You can help yourself more by paying off what you owe and reducing your debt than what you can potentially earn in your savings account.
  • If it's too late for that option, consider debt consolidation.

Having debt can be super stressful, but just know that you cannot pay it off overnight. Sometimes you can have really bad luck and have to max out your credit cards. It really does happen to most people at some point. The important thing to remember is that you can overcome being in debt if you take it one step at a time.
