Tips from the Diva!

Now she wants to share her strategies with you, in a series of practical tips. Check them out, put them into practice, and watch your savings grow!

Ask About Upcoming Sales

Make sure you don’t miss money saving sales and promotions during the holidays.  Ask retailers about upcoming sale promotions! Most retailers will reveal sale dates on the items you are considering, as they don't want you to shop their competition.

Plan For Holiday Expenses

Don't forget about expenses you’ll have in addition to gifts this holiday season. Gift giving isn’t the only budget breaker.  When you make your shopping list for presents, remember to budget for decorations, food, travel, holiday entertainment, and even wrapping supplies that you may need.  Create a spending worksheet and think of all the areas for which you need to set aside money – from Christmas cards to your holiday wreath!

Start Holiday Shopping Early

Now is the time to start your holiday shopping! People who put off their holiday shopping usually end up spending more money. And if you’re shopping online, buying at the last minute means paying for one or two day shipping.  Take advantage of the end of summer season sales to get great deals without feeling pressured to spend.  By shopping early, you can make smarter spending decisions that are not based on emotion.  You avoid the temptation of becoming Santa Claus and getting caught up in the spirit of the season to the detriment of your wallet.

Stick to Your Holiday Budget

Be careful not to overspend this holiday season! When you create your budget, make sure to assign a dollar amount to spend for each person on your shopping list, and force yourself to stick to it. If you purchase a gift that is less than what you planned to spend, take that money you save and put it in your piggy bank!

Make a Shopping Itinerary

Before you head off on your holiday shopping trip, know what stores you are going to and how you plan to navigate your day.  By thinking ahead, you can avoid mall traffic or long lines at stores. Starting earlier in the day will help you avoid the last minute rushes.
